Medical Lab Tech Selection Criteria & Application Process
The Medical Laboratory Technology program at Â鶹ÊÓƵ has limited seating with up to twelve students selected to start during the fall semester. All applicants must be current Â鶹ÊÓƵ students who have completed the main college application process before applying to the Medical Laboratory Technology Program.

Admission into the Medical Laboratory Technology program follows the application steps below, with admission then guided by the selection criteria point system also outlined below. Students should work with a health science advisor as they prepare for and apply to the program.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ Medical Lab Tech Selection Criteria
The Selection Committee is guided by a point system in making its decision, but the final selection is up to the committee members.
Students applying to the Medical Laboratory Technology program need to have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher. No points will be awarded for GPA.
All five of the General Education Courses must be completed by the application deadline. Students who have completed Composition 1, General Biology, College Algebra, Humanities Core, and a Civic Literacy / Social / Behavioral Science course with a "C" or better by the application deadline will be awarded 25 points.
Students will receive points for the grades earned in the Support / Prerequisite courses listed below. An "A" is worth 5 points. A "B" is worth 3 points. A "C" is worth 1 point.
- General Biology 1 with lab
- General Chemistry 1 with lab
- General Chemistry 2 with lab
- Introduction to Biotechnology Methods with lab
- Speech
Note: The above science courses must be completed before the June 1 application deadline to receive points.
Students who have served in the Military for at least two years will be awarded 5 bonus points. Proof of service is required.
Submitting two letters of recommendation will result in 5 bonus points.
A one-page, typed essay on the topic of "Why is Medical Laboratory Technology My Career Choice?" will earn the applicant 5 bonus points.
Meeting with a Health Science Advisor before the application deadline to discuss points, program eligibility, and application packet requirements will result in 5 points.
Applicants should attend a Medical Laboratory Technology Open House prior to the application deadline. Students should bring a copy of their transcripts to the Open House.

Students accepted into the Medical Laboratory Technology program will be required to have a background check and drug screening. Applicants must be drug free and free of offenses that would disqualify them from the student clinical experience in a health care setting.
The background check will include Residence History, Nationwide Sexual Offenders Registry search and Florida Statewide Criminal Records search. The cost of the background check and drug screening is the responsibility of the student. The program manger will provide the necessary paperwork to begin the process, once the student has been accepted into the program.

How to Apply for Medical Laboratory Technology
Students are required to visit a Health Sciences Advisor for guidance in planning a schedule for completing prerequisite courses and any remaining support courses prior to admission into the program.
Students with should schedule Health Sciences Advising using the link in the Student Services Appointments section of myÂ鶹ÊÓƵ. Future Students with no Â鶹ÊÓƵ login, use the guest appointment button.
Students must be current students at Â鶹ÊÓƵ before they can apply to the Medical Laboratory Technology program.
NEW STUDENTS: For students new to Â鶹ÊÓƵ, complete the Â鶹ÊÓƵ prior to the Medical Laboratory Technology program application deadline. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee that must be paid before the application can be processed.
Please note that Â鶹ÊÓƵ's general application processing can take up to 14 days due to the current volume of applications. Check your email frequently for your acceptance letter.
In addition, new Â鶹ÊÓƵ students need to
- Submit official High School Transcripts (or GED® scores) to General Admissions.
- Submit official transcripts from any and all colleges attended prior to Â鶹ÊÓƵ (if applicable)
- Provide FL Residency documentation, complete the New Student Orientation, and finalize any other Â鶹ÊÓƵ General Admissions requirements.
RETURNING STUDENTS: Returning/readmit students who have not completed a course in the past year must also . There is no application fee for a readmit application. Readmit Students need to
- Submit official transcripts from any and all colleges attended since their last enrollment at Â鶹ÊÓƵ (if applicable).
- Provide FL Residency documentation, and complete any other Â鶹ÊÓƵ General Admissions requirements.
CURRENT STUDENTS: Current Students may move on to the next step.
Complete the by the application deadline, after you have become an Â鶹ÊÓƵ student. If the deadline has passed, contact a health sciences advisor to see if seats may be available for a possible late application.

There is a $25 non-refundable fee for each program application. This fee must be paid online or at the Student Accounts Business Office before the application deadline.
An UNOFFICIAL copy of each and every college transcript is required with Health Science application. Unofficial Â鶹ÊÓƵ transcripts can be accessed from myGPS or .
Transcripts from other colleges must be received and evaluated by the application deadline. Please be aware that this process can take up to three weeks.

Prior to enrollment into MLT major courses, students must successfully complete the prerequisite courses of General Biology, Speech, and General Chemistry 1 & 2. Completion of Intro to Biotechnology is preferred as well.
Students must also hold a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Students are encouraged to attend a Medical Laboratory Technology Open House prior to their first semester in the MLT program. Students should bring an unofficial copy of their transcript from every college they've attended. All students should successfully complete the programmatic prerequisites, and demonstrate the ability to attend college full-time.
