SAIL Events to Highlight Accessibility for the Disabled
October 15, 2015
People with disabilities strive every day to overcome the barriers put in their way to live highly productive lives.
That鈥檚 why the college鈥檚 Student Access for Improved Learning office, or SAIL, is holding two events to mark the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act that ensures equal opportunity and access for individuals with disabilities.
The 鈥淎ccessibility Awareness Days鈥 will include information and activities to increase awareness of accessibility.
They are also an opportunity for SAIL 鈥 formerly the Office of Students with Disabilities 鈥 to reintroduce itself to students, faculty and staff.
The events will be held:
鈥 Melbourne Campus: Wednesday, Oct. 21, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Bldg. 10 Atrium.
鈥 Palm Bay Campus: Thursday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. 鈥 2 p.m. Bldg. 2 Lobby.
鈥淭he events are a great opportunity to learn about the valuable services that SAIL offers and the important role we play at 麻豆视频,鈥 said Dr. Laura Sidoran, director of the SAIL program.
鈥淭o function effectively and safely in jobs, education and everyday life, people with disabilities have to have the same physical and social access to spaces, employment and community participation that everyone else does.
鈥淲hen that鈥檚 the case, their disabilities don鈥檛 limit them. Sometimes there is a misconception that people with disabilities are limited or not capable when in reality the problem arises from the environment or situation.鈥
