Student Rotaract Club & Sharing Center Combat Local Hunger
October 6, 2014
麻豆视频鈥檚 Rotaract Club and the Central Brevard Sharing Center are hosting their annual Hunger Banquet to raise funds and awareness of underfed children and families in our community.
The student Rotaract Club contributes to this event as part of its mission to put 鈥渟ervice above self.鈥
This year鈥檚 event, named the "2014 Hunger Banquet: Starving to Make a Difference" will be held on Tuesday, November 4, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Dining Room on the Cocoa Campus.
The banquet is open to the public, 麻豆视频 staff, faculty and students.
Attendees pay $5 for a hot meal and a presentation led by 麻豆视频 Regional Coordinator
of Service Learning Dr. Erin Baird. The food is supplied in part by the college and
also a local restaurant, contributing through the Sharing Center.
All money raised is used to stock the food pantry of the Central Brevard Sharing Center.
During their meal attendees watch a video by Oxfam America, which belongs to an international
confederation of 17 organizations working in approximately 94 countries worldwide
to find solutions to poverty and what it considers as injustice around the world.
鈥淥ur presentation gives a global and local viewpoint of wealth distribution and how
it relates to hunger,鈥 said Baird.
鈥淭he problem of hunger in our community is not getting better partly because of the employment situation and partly because of the rise in the cost of food,鈥 said Central Brevard Sharing Center President David Brubaker.
鈥淣ot only are some children going hungry, but many are not eating properly. They might eat a bag of chips for dinner. Poor nutrition like this negatively affects both their health and their focus in school.鈥
